On December 13, 2024, Belle Chasse Middle School 6th grade students and teachers were allowed to speak with and ask questions of our local elected officials. As part of the Project LEAD curriculum, students learn what happens when someone decides to break the law and is caught.
District Attorney Charles Ballay welcomed the students and explained the procedures of the DA’s Office after a crime is committed. He stressed the importance how “everyone on the panel today works as a team and it takes hard work, teamwork and dedication to bring a criminal to justice.”
Sheriff Jerry Turlich and Clerk of Court Kim Turlich-Vaughan spoke about each of their job duties and responsibilities. Sgt. J. Francis an K9 Lobo were scheduled to perform a “show and tell” but, unfortunately, were unable to appear due to being on an active case during time of the presentation.
Finally, Inmate/Trustee Minister Kenneth Darcey accompanied by Sgt. Doug Plaisance spoke to the students about his life behind bars. He explained that being a follower, succumbing to peer pressure and making poor decisions led him down the path where he is today. Students were allowed to ask questions at the end of each presentation. The group was very attentive and extremely inquisitive.
The Plaquemines Parish District Attorney’s Office contends that actively involving students in the learning process about our parish’s legal system, as Project LEAD does, increases students’ understanding of the law and society and that an increase in understanding will foster respect for the law and its principles.
